The Rehearsal Onstage – Edgar Degas – 1874 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Third Granddaughter – 07/12/21

…and as she sat on her bed, listening now to the sound of the warm Midwest summer rain outside, she held the postcard from her grandfather in her hand and contemplated and observed the painting upon it, as he had taught her, when they traveled to art museums, and when he sent postcards in which…he rarely spoke of the art itself, for that was mostly for the sitting on benches together in the galleries, or in the cafeteria with tea or coffee or whatever she wanted, each time, each trip, a wonderful day or afternoon, not that she would remember all his words – for neither did he – but they both remembered and loved the time and the thoughts and feelings they shared together.  For as he had said more than once, that when the words fade away, the beauty of deeply shared warmth and laughter and joy, and the love of beauty, will remain, as it remains because it had become an essential part of who we are, and how and what and who you love, and that is what she is remembering, the who and what and how it colors deeply everything in moments of quiet thought, as now, and even when out in the world with all its noise and confusion because there is something good and lovely from which life emanates and to which you can return…and…and…now she will go and make a cup of tea to come back and listen to the rain for…even a little longer…
