As I sit in my warm, well-lit study and publish this post: Weather – San Fernando Valley – a cold winter evening for us of 45°F.  Before we go to bed, I will turn on the heat to take the slight chill off of the house.

For years, we have had pastors, friends, from Ukraine stay with us for a week while they attended a church conference here in Los Angeles.  Over the years, we have developed close personal friendships with them, experiencing their personalities, learning of their lives and of their families, and of their nation, Ukraine.  Every year from Ukraine, they brought gifts to us.  Sometimes chocolate, once, bags of whole grains they used in everyday Ukrainian cooking, as they knew I liked to cook.  They loved the Mexican egg burritos I would occasionally make for breakfast for them.  In 2017, Zhenya, one of these friends, gave a gift to us of a cross stitching of Psalm 1:3 made by his wife, Katia, which now resides over one of the doors of my study, a psalm which portrays the joy and depth of a flourishing faith as a deeply planted tree.

Протягом багатьох років пастори, друзі з України залишалися з нами протягом тижня, поки вони відвідували церковну конференцію тут, у Лос-Анджелесі.  Протягом багатьох років ми розвинули тісні особисті дружні стосунки з ними, переживаючи їхні особистості, дізнаючись про їхнє життя та їхні сім’ї, а також про їхню націю, Україну.  Щороку з України нам привозили подарунки.  Іноді шоколад, колись пакетики цільного зерна, які вони використовували в повсякденній українській кулінарії, оскільки знали, що я люблю готувати. Вони любили мексиканські яєчні буріто, які я іноді готував для них на сніданок.  У 2017 році Женя, один з цих друзів, подарував нам вишивку хрестом псалма 1:3, зроблену його дружиною Катею, яка зараз знаходиться над одними з дверей мого кабінету, псалом, який зображує радість і глибину квітучої віри як глибоко посаджене дерево.

He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.

My heart now continually goes out to all our friends and their families in Ukraine whose lives, welfare, and nation, are still under direct and constant attack as the bitter winter cold now descends upon them, with food getting scarce and fuel for cooking and heating almost non-existent.  This is a winter where any semblance of a “normal” life has already disappeared and is now only a future hope centered on remembered images, now shattered, of what life was like less than a year ago. 

Моє серце зараз постійно лине до всіх наших друзів та їхніх сімей в Україні, чиє життя, добробут та нація все ще перебувають під прямими та постійними нападами, оскільки на них зараз насувається лютий зимовий холод, коли їжі стає мало, а палива для приготування їжі та опалення майже не існує.  Це зима, коли будь-яка подоба «нормального» життя вже зникла і тепер є лише майбутньою надією, зосередженою на пам’ятних образах, тепер зруйнованих, про те, яким було життя менше року тому.

I have been praying for them, and the international Sunday sermon discussion and prayer group that I am part of has also been praying for all of them by name, and for the Ukrainian people as a whole, and for the nation.  We pray for their safety and provision, and for the end to this groundless, cruel, and destructive war waged by godless, unrighteous men.

Я молився за них, і міжнародна недільна дискусія та молитовна група, до якої я належу, також молилася за всіх поіменно, і за український народ в цілому, і за націю.  Ми молимося про їхню безпеку та забезпечення, а також про припинення цієї безпідставної, жорстокої та руйнівної війни, яку ведуть безбожні, неправедні люди.

We made a collection of money for their needs and for the needs of other families where the fathers are no longer able to work as the war has destroyed their jobs.  I notified our closest friend in Ukraine of the collection and the coming funds and asked for his bank information.  I also asked him to notify me when his bank received the funds.

Ми зробили збір грошей на їхні потреби та на потреби інших сімей, де батьки більше не можуть працювати, оскільки війна знищила їхні робочі місця.  Я повідомив нашого найближчого друга в Україні про інкасацію та майбутні кошти і попросив надати його банківські реквізити.  Я також попросив його повідомити мене, коли його банк отримає кошти.

When I wired the money, my bank informed me that the wire to Ukraine could take up to ten days, which would be our Thanksgiving Day – in my mind, somehow a very appropriate day for them to receive the money, and for us, an additional item of praise on our day of thanks.  My bank also informed me that I would know when the bank in Ukraine received the money, as the wire charge would then show up on my bank account.

Коли я переказав гроші, мій банк повідомив мені, що переказ в Україну може зайняти до десяти днів, що буде нашим Днем подяки – на мою думку, якимось чином дуже підходящим днем для них, щоб отримати гроші, а для нас – додатковим предметом похвали в наш день подяки.  Мій банк також повідомив мене, що я дізнаюся, коли банк в Україні отримає гроші, оскільки банківська сума з’явиться на моєму банківському рахунку.

On Thanksgiving Day, after I got our twenty-one lbs. turkey into the oven, I checked my bank account, and no wire charge was posted so I decided to wait until the following Monday to check again. 

У День подяки, після того, як я отримав наші двадцять один фунт індички в духовку, я перевірив свій банківський рахунок, і плата за переказ не була опублікована, тому я вирішив почекати до наступного понеділка, щоб перевірити ще раз.

On the Monday morning, as I was just about to check my bank account, I received the email message below from our friend in the Ukraine:

Greetings!
Sorry it took so long to reply to you!  We have had several days of total lack of power and communication because of the missile strikes.  It took a while to get the money from the bank.  Thank God yesterday I delivered all the funds you sent to their recipients.  Everyone is very grateful and praying for you!  I have not given it to Igor, because I have not seen him yet, but as soon as he shows up, I will do it immediately.  God bless you!

Вибачте, що вам знадобилося так багато часу, щоб відповісти!  У нас вже кілька днів була повна відсутність світла і зв’язку через ракетні удари.  Знадобився деякий час, щоб отримати гроші з банку.  Слава Богу, вчора я доставив всі кошти, які ви відправили їх одержувачам.  Всі дуже вдячні і моляться за вас!  Я не віддав його Ігорю, тому що я його ще не бачив, але як тільки він з’явиться, я зроблю це негайно.  Будь здоровий!
