On Easter They Will Celebrate with Joy and Thanksgiving the Resurrection of Christ

На Великдень з радістю і вдячністю святкуватимуть Воскресіння Христове

Before the Russian invasion, our friends in Kyiv and their church community were busy enlarging and remodeling the church building to accommodate a growing congregation.  They and their community, including children old enough to work safely, were busy tearing apart parts of the roof, breaking walls and making space for more and bigger windows and new doors, with the goal of making the church more spacious, accommodating, and pleasant.  The work had been going on for a while, slowly but joyfully, as they worked with their own hands to prepare a remodeled church home for Sunday services to resume again in the sanctuary.

До російського вторгнення наші друзі в Києві та їхня церковна громада були зайняті розширенням та реконструкцією церковної будівлі, щоб вмістити зростаючу громаду.  Вони та їхня громада, включаючи дітей, достатньо дорослих, щоб безпечно працювати, були зайняті тим, що розривали частини даху, ламали стіни та звільняли місце для все більших вікон та нових дверей, з метою зробити церкву просторішою, зручнішою та приємнішою. Робота тривала деякий час, повільно, але радісно, оскільки вони працювали власними руками, щоб підготувати відремонтований церковний дім до відновлення недільних служб у святилищі.

The work came to an end, unfinished, when the invasion began.  And then the bombardment and shelling increased which made normal everyday life – their lives – difficult and dangerous.  Eventually many of the church members fled Kyiv, joining the exodus of other ordinary Ukrainian families – parents, babushkas, children & babies, grandchildren, the family pets – cats and dogs – crammed into small cars, in buses, or on foot, heading west, out of Kyiv, to the relative safety of the Polish border, but away from the everyday normal life they had once enjoyed.

Робота підійшла до кінця, незавершена, коли почалося вторгнення.  А потім посилилися бомбардування та обстріли, що зробило нормальне повсякденне життя – їхнє життя – важким і небезпечним.  Зрештою багато хто з членів церкви втік з Києва, приєднавшись до виїзду інших звичайних українських сімей – батьків, бабусь, дітей та немовлят, онуків, домашніх тварин – котів та собак – запханих у маленькі машини, автобуси або пішки, прямуючи на захід, з Києва, до відносної безпеки польського кордону, але подалі від повсякденного нормального життя, яким вони колись насолоджувалися.

When my friends and their families moved away from their ordinary life in Kyiv, joining the overall escape of other church families from danger, they were all leaving the place of the community of faith and life they had all built together amongst themselves.  And part of the jointly held life of the community, was the coming together to remodel and expand and improve with their hands, the church building in which they were to gather together to worship Jesus Christ, the author and refiner of their faith. 

Коли мої друзі та їхні сім’ї відійшли від свого звичайного життя в Києві, приєднавшись до загального втечі інших церковних сімей від небезпеки, вони всі залишали місце спільноти віри та життя, яку вони всі разом побудували між собою. І частиною спільного життя громади було об’єднання для переробки, розширення та вдосконалення своїми руками церковної будівлі, в якій вони мали зібратися разом, щоб поклонятися Ісусу Христу, творцю та провіднику їхньої віри. 

But as of now, I don’t believe the work on the church building is finished, I don’t know how many church members have returned to Kyiv and are able to gather again, but wherever they are, and however and through whatever physical or electronic means they are able to be together, on Easter they will celebrate with joy and thanksgiving the resurrection of Christ, the foundation of our faith and the guarantee of all the promises of God.

Але на даний момент, я не вірю, що робота над церковним будівництвом закінчена, я не знаю, скільки членів церкви повернулися до Києва і можуть зібратися знову, але де б вони не були, і якими б фізичними чи електронними засобами вони не могли бути разом, на Великдень вони будуть з радістю і вдячністю святкувати воскресіння Христове, основа нашої віри і гарантія всіх обітниць Божих.
