The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere – Grant Wood – 1931

Oldest Grandson – 07/09/21

…and what he is learning now is that much of life is like a midnight ride, surprisingly, especially at times of change, newness, times when multiple paths and doors open up and close and reopen, a kaleidoscope of choices, dangers, and opportunities, sometimes one path, one door, encompassing all three at the same time, a kaleidoscope within a larger kaleidoscope, all turning, all entrancing, or just interesting.  And the time and everything before you, only lacking one choice, and that is the choosing not to proceed, not enter, not to walk down a path, leading to other paths and doors to choose, all with more possibilities, dangers, and opportunities – and some solid, others temporal, or secure or ephemeral and risky.  But these are times when all of these kaleidoscopes in life evolve and twirl and the choices become so like having to choose which Ferris Wheel out of a hundred brilliantly lit wheels of different sizes and colors and speed to ride, and if not to ride for a lifetime, to at least ride for a while or years.  And one of those times is when you graduate from high school, for your whole life is before you and, as it is, if we walk with God, He gives us wisdom to choose, and orders our steps for good because He loves us.  And a midnight ride is not in darkness if our love of God lights the way.
