Prologue – Пролог
I received the following message and photos from Alena, the wife of Maxim, a close friend in Ukraine, on Sunday, March 3. In a sense, it is a follow-up, a response, to the last paragraph of my last posting on Ukraine shown right below.
У неділю, 3 березня, я отримала наступне повідомлення та фотографії від Олени, дружини близького друга Максима в Україні. У певному сенсі це продовження, відповідь на останній абзац мого останнього допису про Україну, показаний нижче.
So here we are, and the third year of the war begins. The Ukrainian people do not want to merely exist and fade under Russian domination. They did not start or provoke this war. They want to continue as a separate nation, as a people, with their own language and culture. They want a future of peace for their children. They want to live and thrive as Ukrainians. If any doubt this, to inform your heart and mind in truth, just ask them, or begin to listen to those who have.
Ось ми і приїхали, і починається третій рік війни. Український народ не хоче просто існувати і згасати під російським пануванням. Вони не починали і не провокували цю війну. Вони хочуть існувати як окрема нація, як народ, зі своєю мовою та культурою. Вони хочуть мирного майбутнього для своїх дітей. Вони хочуть жити і процвітати як українці. Якщо хтось сумнівається в цьому, щоб повідомити своє серце і розум по правді, просто запитайте їх або почніть слухати тих, хто має.

Вчора 2 березня рано вранці путін своїм наказом вбив ще мирних мешканців мирного Українського міста Одеса. Ворожий безпілотник, носій смертельної бомби, врізався у будинок, де спали люди. Як результат: вбивство мирних жителів і серед них діти. Розкопки руїн велися цілий день. Поки що знайшли 9 трупів…., але спасителі ще шукають.
Yesterday, March 2, early in the morning, Putin, by his order, killed more civilians in the peaceful Ukrainian city of Odesa. An enemy drone, carrying a deadly bomb, crashed into a house where people were sleeping. As a result: the killing of civilians, including children. Excavations of the ruins were carried out all day. So far, 9 corpses have been found…, but the saviors are still searching.
На вечір до нас прийшли новини, що тут загинула племінниця наших близьких друзів Анна зі своїм маленьким сином Тимофійом ( йому було 3 місяці). Чоловік з донькою чудом залишився живий, бо спали в іншій кімнаті….
In the evening, we received the news that the niece of our close friends Anna and her little son Timothy (he was 3 months old) had died here. The husband and daughter miraculously survived, because they slept in another room….
Ви і досі вважаєте, що Україна не потребує військової допомоги?

Postscript – Постскриптум
As Alena writes, this little baby boy, Timothy, and his mother were killed in Odessa on Saturday, March 2, by a drone bomb. And now, also with this drone attack, the boy’s father lost his wife and son, and his older sister lost her baby brother she was just beginning to know, and the girl herself is now motherless. And somewhere in Ukraine, parents have had their daughter and grandchild brutally taken from them, and elsewhere in Ukraine, there are other grandparents and maybe great-grandparents in tears, mourning losses, persons, who are gone, blasted to death, and who are no longer in their lives or reach – consequences, like the ripples from a stone thrown into a pond ever spreading wider.
Як пише Олена, цей маленький хлопчик Тимофій та його мама загинули в Одесі в суботу, 2 березня, від бомби з дрона. І ось, ще й цією атакою дронів, батько хлопчика втратив дружину та сина, а старша сестра втратила маленького братика, якого тільки починала знайомити, а сама дівчинка тепер без матері. І десь в Україні у батьків жорстоко відібрали доньку та онука, а в інших місцях України є інші бабусі, дідусі і, можливо, прадіди в сльозах, оплакують втрати, люди, яких немає, підірваних до смерті, і яких більше немає в їхньому житті чи досяжності – наслідки, як брижі від каменю, кинутого в ставок, поширюються все ширше.
All this on the order of Putin, a man guilty of murder, of infanticide, as are all those who failed to resist him and willingly participated in ensuring his orders for evil against the Ukrainians – here fathers, mothers, children and infants – were carried out with precision and accuracy. And all those others, who by their words, actions, subterfuge or silence, resisted and worked against providing any aid, defense, or assistance for Ukraine are also equally guilty, however snug, self-righteous, or pure they pretend to be.
Все це за наказом Путіна, людини, винної у вбивстві, дітовбивстві, як і всі ті, хто не зумів йому протистояти і добровільно брав участь у забезпеченні його наказів на зло проти українців – тут батьків, матерів, дітей та немовлят – виконувалися точно та акуратно. І всі ті інші, хто своїми словами, діями, хитрощами чи мовчанням чинив опір і працював проти надання будь-якої допомоги, оборони чи сприяння Україні, також однаково винні, якими б затишними, самовдоволеними чи чистими вони не виглядали.
All these share in the results of this man’s evil – the slaughter of Timothy, a boy three months old, who less than a week before this posting, was alive and well and thriving, held in the arms of his mother, nursing at her breast, sleeping upon her warm living body, understanding his limited world only through her touch and nourishment, who is now just a bloodied tiny little corpse, battered and cold, as cold as the corpse of his equally battered mother, whose milk no longer flows for her son – her baby boy whose eyes are no longer open, and who no longer finds rest in the comfort and peace of her once enveloping gentle arms. They are both dead, battered, cold, and gone. There is no pretending here.
Все це розділяє наслідки зла цієї людини – вбивства Тимофія, тримісячного хлопчика, який менш ніж за тиждень до цієї посади був живий, здоровий і процвітаючий, тримався на руках у матері, годував її грудьми, спав на її теплому живому тілі, розуміючи його обмежений світ лише через її дотик і живлення, Тепер він просто закривавлений крихітний труп, побитий і холодний, такий же холодний, як труп його не менш пошарпаної матері, чиє молоко більше не тече для її сина – її маленького хлопчика, чиї очі більше не відкриті, і який більше не знаходить спокою в затишку і спокої своїх колись обволікаючих ніжних обіймів. Вони обоє мертві, побиті, холодні та зникли. Тут не можна претендувати.
Before the Lord, regardless of who or what and where we are, we are all responsible for the consequences of our actions or non-actions, the content of our words, and the intent of our silences. Why is it that so many within our country do not understand this? Why is there no fear of the Lord or judgment? What is it about the two Great Commandments that we do not understand? Why is there so little love of God or neighbor exhibited daily among us? Who do we really believe our neighbor is?
Перед Господом, незалежно від того, хто, що і де ми знаходимося, ми всі несемо відповідальність за наслідки наших вчинків чи бездіяльності, за зміст наших слів і за намір нашого мовчання. Чому так багато людей у нашій країні цього не розуміють? Чому немає страху перед Господом і осуду? Що такого у двох Великих Заповідях, яких ми не розуміємо? Чому серед нас так мало любові до Бога чи ближнього щодня? Ким ми насправді вважаємо свого ближнього?
