Corridor In The Asylum

Second Grandson – 08/31/23

…and now it seems that when he started his first year in college, things were more set, he was more certain about…well, the things that were more certain, but now…he wasn’t even certain what those things were, for now with his second year, beginning it, most things seemed uncertain, shifting, and he realized that all those things, whatever they were…all the things about himself that…was it just one year ago?…that he was certain about, nothing of that remains…whatever all that was.  And…  And a year ago when he arrived here, when his parents, arranging days off from work, and brothers and sisters and many others brought him here, there was just a lot of laughing and noise and so many people about, lots of kids – did he just think that?  – wow – lots of well, kids like him…moving in and that was fun, but really a blur, but when they all left – and for some reason he was waiting for that – and it became quiet – at least for him, he walked out of his dorm room and stood still for a moment in the hall and saw people, yes, but also so many doors that he knew at some point, they would all be closed.  And he walked into all the buildings with classrooms and into the Admin building, and at times just paused and stared down the corridors, some empty, some with a few doors open, some with many doors open, some with all doors shut, and this all seemed…  Ok, yes, he was never known as a deep thinker, never pretended to be one, and he once told his grandfather that he just wanted to have fun, and that is true, but…there was something about all those corridors, something about all those doors…that was something different, not fun but was…deeper, and better…yes, better, but what that better was, he still didn’t know, but maybe that was it, seeing corridors and doors – and some doors he has already walked through, and maybe just that, the walking through doors…that was it, that was better than fun…
