For Myles & Theo – July 2020 – Two Blessings in a Troubled & Troubling Year
Once I saw waiting
For the light to change
On a busy corner
An African-American boy
A student
From a nearby school
A tall boy
Of a light black-colored skin
Round pleasant face, gentle face
Eyes ahead quietly waiting
Lots of hair upon his head
High and almost Afro
As was my habit
I began to pray for him,
But then, I stopped,
The One Once Upon the Cross
He stopped me, and
Showed me a boy
Born into a land that
Would rather him
Not be
Here, not be
It pained my heart
I wondered, as I averted my eyes
How does one grow within such
A light of no light
He
Waiting for the light to change
I hope it is gentle
That touch or loving word that
Turns his eyes always away
From such knowledge
Be it possible
Even
For how does a light black-skinned youth
Even
Survive
Even
Pleasant of face and features
The light changed
And I turned left with the arrow
Thanking the Burning Bush for the boy
At the corner
Waiting still for the green hand to appear
He
Still hurts my heart
This my God also knows
